Abstract

Klarenstraat in Amsterdam.

Abstract

Featuring buildings typically constructed of concrete, Brutalist architecture flourished in the 1950s to mid-1970s. Though controversial, the style has an enthusiastic fan base-including John Grindrod, who is on a mission to explain his passion. His enlightening study brings humor, insight, and honesty to the subject as it journeys from the UK to examine Brutalism's influence around the world, from Le Corbusier's designs in India to Lina Bo Bardi's buildings in Brazil. Featuring a series of mini essays, along with illustrations by The Brutal Artist, it explains the human aspect of Brutalism and explores its architectural, historical, and even pop-cultural meanings.

Abstract

After World War II, West Germans and West Berliners found ways of communicating both their recent sufferings and aspirations for stable communities through buildings that fused the ruins of historicist structures with new constructions rooted in the modernism of the 1910s and 201820s. As Modernism as Memory illustrates, these postwar practices undergird the approaches later taken in influential structures created or renovated in Berlin following the fall of the Wall, including the Jewish Museum and the Reichstag, the New Museum and the Topography of Terror. While others have characterized contemporary Berlins museums and memorials as postmodern, Kathleen James-Chakraborty argues that these environments are examples of an architecture of modern memorythat is much older, more complex, and historically contingent. She reveals that churches and museums repaired and designed before 1989 in Dfcren, Hanover, Munich, Neviges, Pforzheim, Stuttgart, and Weil am Rhein contributed to a modernist precedent for the relationship between German identity and the past developed since then in the Ruhr region and in Berlin. Modernism as Memory demonstrates that how one remembers can be detached from what one remembers, contrasting ruins with recollections of modernism to commemorate German suffering, the Holocaust, and the industrial revolution, as well as new spaces for Islam in the country.

Abstract

Opening Lines: Sketchbooks of Ten Modern Architects', an exhibition drawn from the Drawing Matter collection, with additional loans from selected architects, is dedicated to architectural sketchbooks in practice and on display.0The exhibition presents a variety of sketchbook and sketch practices by architects whose built work has been largely formed through drawing by hand on paper. In parallel, it explores the parameters of displaying sketchbooks, considering how an object designed to be held and leafed through can be presented within the requirements of a museum setting. The project therefore considers the content and materiality of sketchbooks both within an architect?s oeuvre, and in the context of institutional display.00Exhibition: Tchoban Foundation, Berlin, Germany (30.06. - 07.10.2018).

Abstract

This publication by the Flemish Architecture Institute presents a generous selection of recently completed projects in words and pictures. About fifty projects are covered by means of extensive plans and photos and they give rise to a critical reflection on current developments in Flemish architecture. The book includes articles that deal with such topics as the poetry of utility buildings, the responsibility of architecture for the landscape, the exploration of a new scale and the individual character of Flemish architecture abroad. What the visual essays by four leading photographers have in common is a serious interest in the concrete physical experience. They view the architectural object not as something static, but as a beckoning space that should be explored, studied, tried and tested.

Abstract

In an environment which is in parts so complex that roads cannot be constructed, railways and stations have become the lifeblood system of the largest country in the world. Station Russia explores how they, and the people who use them, navigate the vast and often empty expanse of the Russian landscape in the historical perspective. In a new exhibition conceived and created for the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Russian pavilion has been transformed into a train station with five halls: "The Geography of Free Space", "The Architectural Depot", "The Waiting Hall of the Future", "The Crypt of Memories", and "Aboard the Free Space". In these halls, contemporary Russian architects, designers and artists create multimedia installations, as well as demonstrate photographs, models and artefacts, to investigate the past of the network and to present their vision of its future. The focus of the exhibition and the accompanying catalog forms a parallel with the history of the Russian pavilion itself, which was inaugurated in 1914. The building's architect, Alexey Shchusev, was also responsible for the Kazan Railway Station - the Moscow terminus of the South-Eastern Railway.

Abstract

This book is a tribute to the works of the Danish engineer Ole Vanggaard, who has been working as an engineer, teacher, consultant, theorist, and artist, showing some of his projects and 17 smaller articles by former colleagues and collaborators, telling about projects they have been doing with Ole and displaying the wide range of his career, both at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and his many consultant jobs for architectural offices and artists. His work also shows how engineers and architects can and should work together.

Abstract

Abstract

Non-Referential Architecture is a manifesto on a new kind of architecture. Non-Referential Architecture presents a new framework for architecture in a world that is increasingly free of ideologies. We have left behind the values of multicultural postmodernity! Non-Referential Architecture offers unlimited possibilities for the liberated mind. The book Non-Referential Architecture has been in the making for some time. The two authors – the architect Valerio Olgiati and the architectural theoretician Markus Breitschmid – know each other since 2005 and have had many conversations in Switzerland, the United States of America, and Portugal. The fruits of these conversations have been several previous publications that took on the form of books, essays, and interviews. The idea to make the book in hand arose in 2013. The content of the book coalesced in multiple extended conclaves held in the Swiss Alps and in Alentejo. The book was ultimately written in Virginia.
